Due to the switch to vB3 on genmay most (if not all...) of these filters will have issues. I'll do my best to convert them (atleast the ones that I use ;) ). If a filter that you are interested in is not functioning properly please contact me, I Robert I, or the one that created the filter and ask me/them to fix it for you.
Sooo you've got some problems eh? Well that's to be expected I guess. I'll try to answer those questions that seem to pop up the most here. But please, as always, read the install instructions first if you haven't already.
It's not working!!
Wow, that kinda sucks don't it? Well first off. Make sure that proxomitron is running. Also make sure that you've set up your browser properly, for information on that have a look at the
install page..
Still not working? Crap... well, some filters are known to mess with each other. The reason for that is that they change HTML and they are triggered by the structure of HTML. So if one filter relies on the word "foo" being present and another filter before it has changed that word to "bar" it aint gonna work now is it? Workarounds for that is to try to stack the filters in an order that makes it work. Or you'll have to get your hands dirty and alter the actual filter.
Another more common reason is that you have simply forgot to edit the filter by inserting your name or some other needed information. Have a look through the filter and look for ALL CAPS text, that usually means you need to provide some info. Also don't forget to read what the creator said about it in the description.
Why doesn't filter X work together with filter Y?
I kinda answered that in the "It's not working!!" question. The reason is that the filters can interfere with each other if they change the keywords that the other filter relies on. The only solution is to try to make them run in an order that bypasses this problem, or you'll just have to do some dirty work and modify the filter that isn't working.
I want to make my own filters, how do I do that?
Good to hear! I might do a small write up for this in the future, but for now you'll have to rely on
Proxomitrons documentation. Proxomitron uses a "language" very similar to regular expressions so if you have experience with that you'll find it quite easy to learn. For most simple find and replace type deals you don't need that of course. Documentation for the syntax can be found
here.
Isn't Proxomitron dead?
Well... yeah, but the last version works just fine and there's quite a few pages that support the Proxomitron community with language patches etc. These are the last words from the creator:
"Sorry Folks,
I regret to say the Proxomitron web filter is well and truly dead. Unfortunately, while attending a "save the hedgehog" rally, it was fatally mauled by a jealous flock of rampaging echidnas."
I don't like the way filter X formats the text/background/colours.
You're never satisfied are you? What you need to do here is to take a look at the "Replace" clause and change the HTML to reflect your needs. Things to look for are things like "style=...." and the like. It shouldn't be all that hard to figure out what needs to be changed. Just try something and see what happens, it's not like you're gonna break something.
My platform isn't supported by Proxomitron. Are there any alternatives?
The only one I've found that seems good enough is Privoxy. It's slightly more complex and a bit harder to configure but it gets the job done. You can find it
here.
Soo... what is this "genmay" you speak of?
Well, if you're asking that question it must mean that you found your way here from someplace other than genmay :)
Genmay is an internet forum. You can have a look at it
here, please note that this forum isn't like other forums, think of it like the black sheep of the family ;)
I'm already using a proxy in school at work etc. Can I make Proxomitron work through that?
Yup, you sure can. Have a look at the Proxomitron documentation here:
External Proxy
Hey man! You didn't answer my question!
Well did you ask it then!? If not it's kinda hard to answer it ya know. Send me a
PM over at [M] and I'll see if I can answer it.
Please note though, I'm not some kind of Proxomitron guru and I may not be able to answer questions regarding filters that I haven't created myself, but I'll try my best to answer your questions.
